Presidential Address 2026: Muizzu outlines bold Coast Guard expansion

By Ahmed Ashraf Published February 5, 2026

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced major strides in strengthening the Maldives’ defence sector, highlighting decisive investments aimed at enhancing maritime security, search and rescue capabilities, and national preparedness.

Speaking at the Presidential Address Session of the People’s Majlis, President Muizzu revealed that, as part of the government’s initiative to double the operational capacity of the Coast Guard, the largest military vessel ever inducted into the Maldives National Defence Force was commissioned last year. The vessel was provided as a grant by the Türkiye, underscoring growing defence cooperation between the two nations.

The President noted that the commissioning of the vessel represents a historic milestone in the modernisation of the defence forces, significantly strengthening the Coast Guard’s ability to safeguard Maldivian waters, respond to maritime threats, and conduct complex operations across the country’s vast Exclusive Economic Zone.

Further reinforcing maritime security, President Muizzu confirmed that efforts to acquire Inspector Crafts for military-led maritime surveillance and search and rescue operations are already underway. Three of these vessels are currently in active service, contributing to enhanced operational reach and rapid response capabilities.

Looking ahead, the President announced that an additional 17 vessels are scheduled to be commissioned within the current year, a move expected to substantially expand the Coast Guard fleet and elevate national defence readiness.

The defence expansion reflects the Muizzu administration’s broader strategy to modernise security institutions, strengthen sovereignty, and ensure the Maldives remains capable of protecting its maritime domain amid evolving regional security dynamics.
