Jumhooree Party (JP) leader and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim has called on the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to remain patient and refrain from engaging in unlawful activities or spreading unrest in the country.
Speaking at the gathering in ADh. Maamigili during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing visit to Alif Dhaal Atoll, Qasim said the MDP’s recent protest in Malé was an illegal assembly that directly violated the laws and principles outlined in the Constitution. “The Constitution guarantees freedom of assembly, but only under certain conditions” Qasim reminded. “What we saw that night was clearly beyond the bounds of law and order”.
Qasim commended the Maldives Police Service for its firm stance, noting that law enforcement had repeatedly warned protestors before taking action. “The police acted within the law. When they warned that force would be used if violations continued, the protestors still proceeded — that is going beyond the law and the Constitution,” he stated.
The JP leader emphasized that Islam forbids causing discord and that true believers must value peace and patience. “Islam does not encourage conflict or strife. Those who create unrest should reflect on its weight in the eyes of Allah,” he said.
Addressing the protestors who participated in MDP protest, Qasim described them as individuals seeking employment or personal opportunity. “When the time is right, by Allah’s will, they too will receive opportunities — for jobs, empowerment, and even governance. Why rush? Allah has commanded patience,” he added.
Qasim also criticized former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom for engaging in what he described as destructive commentary, saying Yameen was unaware of the harm caused by his own words.
His remarks underline growing frustration among the public over the opposition’s continued attempts to destabilize the country, even as President Muizzu’s administration focuses on national unity, economic revival, and restoring order across the Maldives.
