Qasim: Strong PNC councils essential to protect economic recovery

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 7 hours ago

Leader of the Jumhooree Party and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim has declared that backing candidates of the People’s National Congress in April’s Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections is vital to safeguard national stability and accelerate economic recovery.

Addressing supporters at the launch of JP’s campaign activities, Qasim announced that the party will endorse PNC candidates across the country, except in ADh. Maamigili and Fenfushi councils. He framed the decision as a strategic move in the national interest, arguing that fragmented political control at the council level would undermine ongoing reforms spearheaded by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

Qasim warned that voting for opposition candidates at this stage would serve no constructive purpose, stressing that the country requires unity to consolidate fiscal reforms and maintain peace. He contended that the previous administration left the economy in severe distress and said the current government’s corrective measures demand cooperation at every level of governance.

“I urge everyone to cast their votes for PNC members to ensure the continued peace and stability of our nation,” Qasim told the gathering, underscoring that councils must work in harmony with the central government to secure development budgets and implement island projects effectively.

He further emphasized that President Muizzu should be given the political space to address national debt challenges and stabilize the economy. According to Qasim, sustaining a parliamentary majority is also critical to advance constitutional amendments aimed at strengthening governance structures.

The endorsement signals a significant consolidation of pro government forces ahead of the April polls, reinforcing the administration’s push for synchronized policy implementation from Parliament to local councils as the Maldives navigates a decisive phase of economic restructuring.
