President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has urged Maldivians to use the holy month of Ramadan as a catalyst for personal reform and national transformation, declaring that true societal progress begins with individual change rooted in faith, discipline and moral integrity.
In a statement marking the arrival of Ramadan 1447, the President extended warm greetings to the people of the Maldives and the wider Islamic Ummah, describing the sacred month as a season of blessings and virtue ordained to cultivate Taqwa, or God consciousness, as revealed in the Holy Quran. He emphasized that fasting is not merely an act of worship, but a pathway to righteousness that steers believers away from sin and strengthens their commitment to good deeds.
President Muizzu underscored that lasting reform in any nation must begin at the personal level. He noted that meaningful change within families, communities and the country at large depends on individuals becoming living examples of the values they seek to promote. When transformation starts within the self, he said, its impact naturally extends outward, shaping society as a whole.
Highlighting the aspirations of the Maldivian people, the President called for renewed commitment to religious observance, including steadfast performance of the five daily prayers, and strict adherence to laws and national principles. He envisioned a society that safeguards children, honors elders and firmly rejects the destructive influence of drugs and harmful habits. Such a society, he stressed, must uphold the fundamental tenets of Islam while preserving the resilient Islamic identity and refined cultural heritage of the Maldivian nation.
Framing these goals within a broader national context, President Muizzu stated that moral and spiritual renewal is essential to safeguarding the peace, security and sovereignty of the Maldives. A righteous and well mannered people, he said, will earn global respect and elevate the country’s standing in the international community.
The President described Ramadan as a comprehensive school of character. Through fasting and prayer, he noted, believers learn discipline, time management and devotion. Through Dhikr, they cultivate humility and piety. He also reflected on the historic events of Ramadan that demonstrated courage, sacrifice and steadfastness within the Islamic Ummah, saying these lessons remain relevant for modern societies navigating challenges between truth and falsehood.
Social gatherings during Iftar and Suhoor, he added, play a vital role in strengthening family ties and reinforcing unity within communities, nurturing compassion and mutual respect among citizens.
Concluding his message, President Muizzu called on every Maldivian to embark on a personal journey of reform during this Ramadan, aligning individual conduct with both religious values and national responsibilities. He prayed for divine guidance and success in achieving positive change, and for the continued freedom and sovereignty of the Maldives.
As the nation enters the blessed month, the President’s message sets a clear tone: spiritual renewal must translate into collective progress, ensuring a stronger, morally grounded and forward looking Maldives.
