In a dramatic shake-up within Parliament, Baarah MP and ruling PNC Vice President Ibrahim Shujau (Redwave Shuja) has been removed from the influential Public Accounts Committee, as a corruption scandal surrounding his financial dealings deepens.
The transfer comes on the heels of a leaked report by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), which allegedly implicates Shujau in illicit enrichment and questionable financial transactions. His removal was made official today—coincidentally, on the same day the MMA was scheduled to appear before the very committee he sat on, for a session set at 11:00 AM.
Guraidhoo MP Hanaan Mohamed Rasheed has been appointed to replace Shujau on the committee, while Shujau has been reassigned to the National Development and Heritage Committee.
The FIU’s investigation reportedly focuses on suspicious fund transfers involving three companies subcontracted by the Armed Forces Welfare Cooperative (SIWEC) for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s inauguration ceremony. These financial movements triggered red flags within the central bank’s oversight body.
The Maldives Police confirmed they are also probing the matter but have yet to disclose when the investigation began or what specific steps have been taken so far.
Shujau, a key figure in the PNC and once seen as a rising political force, now faces mounting scrutiny as law enforcement and regulatory agencies dig deeper into allegations that could have far-reaching consequences for political accountability in the Maldives.
