Retina Laser Treatment Debuts in Maldives — A Step Forward for Eye Care

By Hussain Shinan Published October 9, 2025

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has launched retina laser treatment services in the Maldives, marking another milestone in the country’s expanding access to advanced healthcare.

The new service was officially inaugurated at IGMH on Wednesday, making the hospital the first in the country to offer this specialised eye care treatment locally.

Retinal laser treatment is a critical medical procedure used to protect and preserve the vision of patients, particularly premature babies who are at high risk of developing serious retinal conditions that can lead to blindness if untreated.

Abdul Razzaq Haleem, CEO of Malé City Group of Hospitals, said the introduction of this service represents an important advancement in neonatal and ophthalmic care in the Maldives.

“This service provides a crucial treatment option to protect the vision of premature babies, ensuring timely access to specialised care,” Haleem said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the doctors and nurses of the Ophthalmology Department at IGMH for their dedication.”

The launch of retina laser treatment follows another major medical milestone at IGMH earlier this month, when the hospital successfully performed the first endoscopic spine surgery in the Maldives — a breakthrough in the country’s surgical capabilities.

Both initiatives highlight IGMH’s growing role in providing specialised, high-precision medical treatments within the Maldives, reducing the need for patients to seek such services abroad.
