Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has officially commenced seaplane check-in services at Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport, marking another milestone in the phased rollout of services at the country’s new international terminal.
The newly operational seaplane counters began serving passengers today, offering a more streamlined and comfortable check-in experience for travellers connecting to domestic destinations by seaplane. MACL said the move is aimed at improving convenience for visitors arriving in the Maldives, particularly those transferring to resort islands.
Located adjacent to the arrivals area, the new check-in counters are housed in a fully air-conditioned, spacious setting designed with passenger comfort in mind. Images shared by MACL show indoor greenery and seating arrangements that create a calm, lounge-like atmosphere, a notable upgrade from previous facilities.
While Terminal 1 became operational in July last year, seaplane check-in services had continued to operate from the old terminal until now. In preparation for the transition, trial operations were conducted in December, in collaboration with national carrier Maldivian and FlyMe, allowing MACL to test passenger flow and operational readiness.
The new terminal was inaugurated on July 26, coinciding with Maldives’ Independence Day, and has since seen a steady transition of airline operations. By December, the airport recorded one of its busiest months, reflecting growing passenger volumes. At present, 39 airlines are operating from Terminal 1, with Russian national carrier Aeroflot being the latest airline to relocate to the facility.
The development of the new terminal represents one of the largest infrastructure investments at Velana International Airport, with USD 457 million (approximately MVR 7 billion) spent on the project. MACL has repeatedly stated that the expansion forms part of its broader strategy to elevate the overall airport experience and provide travellers with a premium start to their journey in the Maldives.
