In a significant operation underscoring the Maldives’ intensified efforts against tobacco smuggling, three Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended in Malé last night after authorities seized 221 cartons of illicit American Legend cigarettes.
The arrests occurred on Bodurasgefaanu Magu when a pickup truck, observed unloading suspicious cargo, attempted to flee the scene. Upon interception, police discovered three black bags containing the contraband, believed to have been illegally imported into the country.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of increased tobacco smuggling in the Maldives, a trend that has escalated following recent amendments to the Tobacco Control Act. In November 2024, the government implemented stringent measures, including a ban on the import, sale, and use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices, and raised the legal smoking age from 18 to 21. Additionally, import duties on cigarettes were significantly increased, leading to a surge in black market activities.
The Maldives Customs Service has reported multiple seizures in recent months, including over 230,000 cigarettes at Gan International Airport. These enforcement actions reflect the authorities’ commitment to curbing the illegal tobacco trade and enforcing the updated regulations.
The arrested individuals are currently in custody as investigations continue. Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the origin of the smuggled goods or potential connections to larger smuggling networks.
This latest crackdown serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the Maldives in enforcing tobacco control measures and the ongoing efforts required to combat illicit trade in the region.
