State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has brought a 1,200 kilowatt generator into operation in Vilimalé, as part of its preparations for the upcoming peak electricity consumption period.
The utility provider said the newly deployed generator is expected to boost generation capacity on the island, strengthen the reliability of power supply, and improve overall service delivery for residents.
Electricity demand in the Maldives typically rises sharply during Ramadan, which begins on 17 February this year, as households spend more time at home while schools and offices operate on reduced schedules. STELCO said the additional capacity will help ensure uninterrupted electricity during this high-demand period.
The Vilimalé deployment forms part of STELCO’s annual readiness programme, which focuses on reinforcing power generation and distribution systems ahead of peak seasons.
Last year, STELCO undertook a major capacity expansion during Ramadan with the commissioning of a new power plant in Hulhumalé. As part of that project, Annex 2 of the Hulhumalé Power Station was completed, adding 12 generator sets, each with a capacity of 1.6 megawatts, significantly strengthening electricity supply in the Greater Malé region.
STELCO said the latest addition in Vilimalé reflects its ongoing commitment to maintaining a stable and reliable power supply across the country, particularly during periods of increased demand.
