STELCO to Deploy 350 Staff for One-Day Electricity Meter Reading in Malé

By Hussain Shinan Published February 26, 2025

In a bid to streamline its billing process, the State Electric Company (STELCO) will deploy 350 staff members on Wednesday to conduct electricity meter readings across Malé in a single day. The initiative aims to ensure that customers receive accurate bills for the month, avoiding discrepancies and overlapping charges that have occurred in the past.

STELCO’s General Manager, Mohamed Saleem, confirmed during a press conference that the next meter reading will be conducted on March 30, after Ramadan. This move is part of a larger effort by the company to address billing issues that arose from a 12-day overlap in previous billing cycles, which led to customers receiving combined bills for two months.

By completing the meter readings tomorrow, STELCO hopes to issue a single bill for each household during the holy month of Ramadan, eliminating previous concerns over double billing. Saleem also explained that discounts on electricity bills will be applied based on the consumption patterns of the last 12 months, with reductions applied to any increase in usage.

STELCO has encouraged the public to cooperate with the meter reading process and advised customers who may be away for extended periods to inform the company in advance so that alternative arrangements can be made for their readings.

The company also emphasized that the new billing structure, with separate monthly charges, will help to ensure a more transparent and accurate billing process moving forward.
