STELCO Unveils Plans for New Powerhouse in Thulusdhoo to Meet Growing Demand

By Hussain Shinan Published March 25, 2025

The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has awarded a significant contract for the construction of a new powerhouse in Thulusdhoo, Kaafu Atoll, marking an important step in improving the island’s energy infrastructure.

The contract, valued at USD 772,727, was awarded to Sunwill Private Limited, with the project set to be completed within 175 days. The agreement was formalized at a signing ceremony attended by key officials, with STELCO’s Managing Director Hussain Fahmy and Sunwill’s Managing Director Abdulla Rafiu representing their respective organizations.

In his remarks, Fahmy emphasized the importance of the new powerhouse, highlighting Thulusdhoo as the first island outside of Malé where STELCO began its service provision. He acknowledged the existing powerhouse’s quality but pointed out that its location in a residential area led to the decision to relocate it to a newly reclaimed area. This move aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s policy of building powerhouses outside urban centres to improve public convenience.

“We are moving the powerhouse to a newly reclaimed area, which will reduce any potential disruptions for residents and ensure that the power supply is more reliable,” Fahmy explained. “I would like to express my appreciation to President Muizzu for this decision, which is in line with efforts to provide better services to the people.”

The new facility is expected to significantly improve the island’s electricity infrastructure, which has been struggling to meet the demands of increasing population and development.

During the ceremony, Ibrahim Naseem, the Member of Parliament for Thulusdhoo Constituency, expressed his support for the project and discussed the ongoing challenges faced during peak demand times, such as festive occasions like Eid when the island is brightly lit. He is optimistic that the new powerhouse will address these issues and stabilize the electricity grid.

Thulusdhoo Council President Aslam Moosa also shared the excitement of the island’s residents, stating that the new powerhouse has long been anticipated. He noted that the island’s electricity consumption is expected to grow significantly in the future, particularly with plans for new guesthouses, which will drive up demand.

The new powerhouse project is a crucial part of STELCO’s efforts to modernize the country’s electricity infrastructure and ensure that growing islands like Thulusdhoo have the resources they need to thrive. As the population continues to grow and development accelerates, this investment will play a critical role in supporting the island’s future.
