State Trading Organization (STO), proudly known as the People’s Choice, has imported fresh oranges and is now selling them at just MVR 35 per kilogram from its Orchid Magu STO People’s Choice outlet.
The intervention comes after private sellers sharply increased fruit prices, pushing essential produce beyond the reach of many families. By stepping in, STO has once again proven its role as a protector of the people, ensuring that every household can afford daily nutrition.
At the new fair rate, each orange costs around MVR 6, a price that stands in stark contrast to the inflated figures previously charged by profiteering traders. This move underscores the President Muizzu government’s broader commitment to food security and market stability, placing the needs of Maldivian families above private profiteering.
Officials highlight that by leveraging its supply network and government backing, STO is able to shield citizens from global price pressures and opportunistic local sellers. The decision to sell oranges is the latest example of the state enterprise’s promise to keep essentials accessible and affordable.
As global markets fluctuate, STO’s timely action once again demonstrates why it is celebrated as the People’s Choice—delivering quality goods at fair prices to Maldivians nationwide.
