Stormy Weekend Ahead: Met Office Warns of Rough Seas and Heavy Downpours

By Ahmed Ashraf Published July 10, 2025

The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms across the entire country this weekend, cautioning residents and travelers to prepare for adverse weather conditions.

According to the latest advisory, rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected on Friday and Saturday, with particularly intense conditions predicted in southern and central atolls. The Met Office has issued a White Alert from Alifu Dhaalu Atoll to Addu City, effective from 1:15 PM to 6:00 PM today, warning of potential hazards from heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Winds during squalls could reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour, posing risks for sea travel and outdoor activities. While seas in the southern region are expected to remain moderate, other areas will experience moderate to rough seas, becoming especially turbulent during squalls.

The country is currently under the influence of the southwest monsoon, which spans from May to November. This seasonal period is characterized by heavy rain and strong winds, contrasting with the calmer northeast monsoon that runs from January to March. April and December mark transitional months when the weather patterns shift between these two monsoon periods.

Authorities urge the public to stay updated on weather advisories and exercise caution, especially seafarers and those traveling between islands.
