Land reclamation works underway in Th. Vilufushi have reached a significant milestone, with around 80 percent of the project now completed, according to an update released on 29 January 2026.
The reclamation project aims to create 81 hectares of land, of which 65 hectares have already been reclaimed. The works are being carried out using the dredger Filippo Brunelleschi, which has a dredging capacity of 11,300 cubic metres, and officials say progress remains on schedule.
The project is being implemented by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which commenced reclamation works on 14 November 2025. The reclaimed land forms a key component of a broader development plan that includes the construction of a new domestic airport on the island.

MACL was formally tasked with developing and operating the Vilufushi airport following the signing of an agreement in September 2025. The agreement was signed by Finance Minister Moosa Zameer and MACL’s Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, during a ceremony held in Vilufushi that was attended by President Mohamed Muizzu.
At the same event, reclamation works for the airport project were officially inaugurated. According to MACL, the planned airport will feature a 1,200-metre runway, a modern passenger terminal, and supporting infrastructure. The project is expected to be completed within 30 months, in line with a pledge made by President Muizzu to the residents of Vilufushi.
President Muizzu had earlier described the airport as a key development commitment for the island, highlighting its importance for improving connectivity and supporting economic growth in Thaa Atoll.
With reclamation progressing steadily and nearing completion, authorities say the project remains on track, marking an important step toward the realisation of Vilufushi’s long-anticipated airport development.
