Theft tops crime reports in early 2025, Police data reveals

In the initial weeks of 2025, theft has emerged as the most frequently reported crime in the Maldives, according to recent data from the Maldives Police Service. As of mid-January, authorities have documented 73 theft cases, surpassing other reported incidents.

Crime Statistics Overview:

  • Theft: 73 cases
  • Traffic Accidents: 53 cases
  • Drug-Related Offenses: 27 cases
  • Lost Items: 26 reports
  • Vandalism: 18 cases
  • Embezzlement: 12 cases
  • Robbery: 9 cases
  • Assault: 7 cases
  • Sexual Offenses: 3 cases
  • Domestic Violence: 3 cases

This pattern mirrors the crime trends observed in 2024, where theft and traffic accidents were predominant. Throughout 2024, the Maldives Police Service recorded 2,290 theft cases and 2,025 traffic accidents. Other notable figures from the previous year include 414 robberies, 358 assaults, and 236 drug-related offenses.

The consistent prevalence of theft and traffic incidents underscores the need for enhanced preventive measures and public awareness campaigns. Authorities are urged to implement strategies to address these issues effectively, aiming to reduce their occurrence in the coming months.
