Tourism Minister Announces Major Expansion of Cruise Tourism Infrastructure

By Hussain Shinan Published January 16, 2025

The Maldives is set to expand its appeal to the growing cruise tourism industry with the development of special ports in three regions, aimed at boosting the arrival of cruise lines to the country. Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal announced the initiative during an interview on state media PSM, highlighting the government’s plans to facilitate more cruise visits this year.

In his address, Minister Faisal shared that the Maldives has already seen significant cruise arrivals, with more than 600 tourists arriving by sea last year and continuing to increase in the current year. However, he acknowledged that restrictions put in place by the previous government had made it difficult for cruise lines to operate in the country. Faisal revealed that the Maldives Yacht Association had raised concerns regarding these challenges, which led him to address the issue and make necessary changes to the regulations.

“The previous policies made it tough for cruise lines to visit the Maldives, but we’ve worked to amend these rules,” Minister Faisal explained. He emphasized that his efforts to listen to industry feedback have now paved the way for a more welcoming environment for cruise lines.

As part of efforts to further boost cruise tourism, the Maldives is investing in infrastructure development, including special ports for cruise ships. Minister Faisal confirmed that new jetties are planned for three key regions: Addu Atoll, Laamu Atoll, and another yet-to-be-revealed location. This move is expected to accommodate an increasing number of cruise ships, fostering further growth in this sector.

The Maldives Association for Yacht Agents (MAYA) has also reported a surge in cruise line interest, with 12 additional ships scheduled to dock in the Maldives before the end of the tourist season. This growing influx of cruise ships aligns with the government’s goal to position the Maldives as a top destination for cruise tourism in the region.

With the establishment of these special ports and continued efforts to streamline regulations, the Maldives is set to become an even more attractive destination for international cruise lines.
