Tragic Collision in Malé Claims Life of Singer’s Only Son; Two Others Seriously Injured

By Ahmed Ashraf Published July 14, 2025

A devastating accident on Boduthakurufaanu Magu near the Maafannu Bus Terminal on Sunday night has claimed the life of 17-year-old Yoosuf Alsan Mohamed and left two others in critical condition.

According to police, the incident occurred around 8:00 PM when a speeding motorcycle carrying two teenage boys struck a 40-year-old man who was using the zebra crossing while out for an evening run. The motorcycle then crashed into a passing pickup truck.

Alsan Mohamed, the rider who succumbed to his injuries, was the only child of well-known singers Mariyam Ashfa and Mohamed Abdul Ghani (Therava). He had recently completed his O-level examinations. The second rider, a 16-year-old boy, and the pedestrian both sustained severe injuries.

Footage circulating on social media shows the pedestrian attempting to cross the road at the zebra crossing from the stadium side toward the bus terminal. The video captures the moment the motorcycle, approaching at high speed from the South Harbor direction, collided with him despite his effort to avoid the vehicle. The impact sent the motorcycle into a pickup truck arriving from the Sinamalé Bridge area, and one of the teenagers was thrown under the truck.

Graphic scenes of blood and scattered motorcycle parts at the crash site have sparked widespread public concern over reckless driving and youth safety in the capital.

Funeral prayers for Alsan Mohamed are scheduled to take place at the Aasahara cemetery after Asr prayers today.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
