Transport Ministry Cancels Scheduled Vehicle Ban for Independence Day, Select Road Closures Still in Effect

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 12 hours ago

The Ministry of Transport has officially revoked its earlier decision to prohibit land vehicle movement across Greater Malé from July 25 to 27 in connection with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations.

In a post published on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Ministry announced that the directive issued on July 24 has been canceled, effectively lifting the time-specific restrictions initially imposed on various vehicle categories.

However, the Ministry clarified that road closures implemented by the Maldives Police Service and other security agencies will remain in effect. As a result, driving in areas cordoned off for Independence Day-related events will continue to be restricted to support safety and security operations.

The now-canceled traffic ban had originally aimed to limit the movement of heavy vehicles—categorized under C0, C2, D, E, and V—as well as impose a full vehicle ban on July 26. These measures were intended to reduce congestion, ensure public safety, and facilitate the smooth execution of large-scale national celebrations.

Authorities have urged the public to stay informed through official channels and to comply with ongoing security instructions issued by police and relevant institutions throughout the Independence Day period.
