Bank of Maldives (BML) has marked a major milestone in its leadership development efforts with the graduation of 20 employees from the prestigious Leadership and People Management Program at Singapore Management University (SMU). The comprehensive program, designed and delivered by SMU, combined interactive classroom learning, in-depth case studies, and practical exercises tailored to the financial services industry. It focused on equipping participants with the skills necessary to lead effectively in a rapidly evolving banking landscape. The curriculum’s emphasis on experiential learning enabled participants to immediately apply leadership principles in their professional roles at BML.

In addition to the main cohort, another 20 BML employees earned the Certificate in Leadership and People Management through the BML Academy after completing a similar SMU-designed program. This dual-track initiative underscores the Bank’s systematic approach to leadership grooming — ensuring opportunities for employees at different stages of their career journey.

Commenting on the achievement, BML CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef said the initiative demonstrates the bank’s strategic investment in human capital. “This investment is a direct reflection of our strong belief that people are our most important asset. Our partnership with SMU plays a fundamental role in shaping the future leadership bench strength required to navigate evolving market dynamics. Our sustained success depends on developing exemplary leaders at every tier of the organization” he stated.

Serving as the cornerstone of BML’s employee development strategy, the BML Academy continues to offer a range of learning and development programs, from technical training to international leadership courses. The Bank’s commitment to professional growth has earned it regional recognition, including the “Asia’s Best Employer Brand Award” from the World HRD Congress and the Employer Branding Institute.

Through its partnership with globally recognized institutions like SMU, BML reaffirms its long-term vision of nurturing capable Maldivian leaders who can steer the country’s largest financial institution toward continued innovation, resilience, and growth.
