Unity Day Message: President Muizzu Says Islamic Values Bind the Maldives Together

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 11 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on Maldivians to strengthen national unity through Islamic values of compassion, solidarity, and collective responsibility, as the nation marked Unity Day, a solemn occasion rooted in shared remembrance and resilience.

In a Unity Day message shared on social media, President Muizzu said the Islamic creed, deeply ingrained in the hearts of Maldivians, continues to guide the nation towards unity in every national endeavour. He emphasised that faith encourages citizens to extend goodness to one another, prioritise care and empathy, and work together in building a strong and harmonious country.

Unity Day in the Maldives is observed annually on December 26, commemorating the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, which claimed lives, displaced communities, and caused widespread destruction across the islands. The day serves both as a remembrance of those lost and as a national symbol of solidarity, highlighting how Maldivians came together across islands, families, and institutions during one of the darkest moments in the country’s history.

Reflecting on that tragedy and other challenges faced by the nation, President Muizzu noted that the salvation of Maldivians has consistently been their virtuous character and exemplary conduct as Muslims. He stressed that moral strength, faith, and unity enabled communities to endure hardship, rebuild lives, and emerge stronger together.

Concluding his message, the President offered prayers for the continued unity of the Maldivian people and for lasting safety and security for the nation, reaffirming that national resilience is sustained through shared faith, compassion, and unwavering unity.
