Velana Airport T1 Expands — Batik Air, Bangkok Airways and Beijing Capital Airlines Begin Operations

By Ahmed Ashraf Published September 23, 2025

Velana International Airport’s (VIA) new passenger facility, Terminal 1, has broadened its operations this month by welcoming three additional carriers: Batik Air, Bangkok Airways, and Beijing Capital Airlines. The milestone strengthens the Maldives’ connectivity with key Asian markets while enhancing the travel experience for both leisure and business passengers.

Celebratory Launch Events

A series of ceremonies marked the official start of operations for the new airlines. On September 21, Beijing Capital Airlines became the first Chinese carrier to operate from Terminal 1, with its inaugural flight JD455-6 receiving a traditional water salute. The 276 arriving passengers were greeted with Maldivian cultural performances, while 248 departing travelers were presented with commemorative gifts. The ceremony was attended by senior officials, including Tree Top Hospital CEO Adil Moosa, MACL Managing Director Mujtaba Latheef, and executives from Voyages Maldives.

Earlier this week, Batik Air and Bangkok Airways also launched services at the terminal. Their first flights — OD293-5 and PG711-2 — were honored with water salutes, with arriving passengers receiving warm cultural welcomes. The opening of check-in counters for both carriers was officiated in a ceremony led by Commissioner General of Customs Fathimath Dhiyana, alongside airline representatives and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) management.

Strengthening Regional and International Links

With the latest additions, Terminal 1 now accommodates seven airlines: Maldivian (the national carrier), Air Arabia (UAE), Beyond (luxury carrier), Fits Air (Sri Lanka), Beijing Capital Airlines (China), Batik Air (Malaysia), and Bangkok Airways (Thailand). Two further airlines are scheduled to transfer to the facility within the coming week.

Beijing Capital Airlines, a low-cost subsidiary of Hainan Airlines based at Beijing Daxing International Airport, offers increased access for Chinese travelers — a key tourism market for the Maldives. Meanwhile, Batik Air and Bangkok Airways expand South and Southeast Asian connectivity, reinforcing VIA’s role as a central hub for the region.

MACL’s Strategic Vision

MACL, the state-owned operator of Velana International Airport, emphasized that the expansion of services at Terminal 1 aligns with its goal of providing world-class facilities and comprehensive support for airlines operating to the Maldives.

Deputy Managing Director Mujtaba Latheef noted that the company’s priority is to elevate passenger experiences and ensure operational efficiency. “We are committed to offering the highest quality of service to all airlines and passengers traveling through the Maldives,” he said during the launch events.

Transforming Passenger Experience

The newly opened Terminal 1, part of VIA’s major redevelopment program, is designed to handle growing passenger volumes while offering modern amenities, streamlined check-in processes, and improved service quality. Its expansion is seen as a pivotal step in meeting the Maldives’ rising demand for international air travel, particularly given the country’s reliance on tourism as a cornerstone of its economy.
