President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to diversifying and expanding the Maldives’ tourism sector by unlocking the potential of previously underdeveloped atolls. The initiative, first outlined in his presidential manifesto and reiterated during his February address to Parliament, focuses on introducing tourism development in Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Thaa, Laamu, and Addu City.
Writing on social media, President Muizzu stated that his government will implement a “multi-pronged approach” to drive resort development in these regions. This includes targeted investment incentives, policy concessions, improvements in public infrastructure, and robust marketing campaigns aimed at attracting both domestic and international investors.
“These efforts are designed to mobilize capital, catalyze economic activity, and ensure equitable growth across the country,” he said, highlighting the government’s broader goal of regional economic integration.
The president also linked the tourism expansion plan with his ongoing investments in national transport infrastructure, noting that improved connectivity will further enhance the viability of resort operations in these areas.
More detailed policy frameworks and execution timelines are expected to be announced by the Ministry of Tourism in the coming week.
This move aligns with the administration’s push to decentralize tourism and increase development in outer atolls, reducing regional disparities and creating new job opportunities beyond the traditional tourism hubs.
