Yellow Alert Issued: Strong Winds and Rough Seas Sweep Across Northern and Central Maldives

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 6 hours ago

The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a yellow alert covering a wide stretch from Haa Alif Atoll to Thaa Atoll, warning of strong winds and dangerous sea conditions throughout the morning hours.

According to the agency, the alert remains active from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on October 23, 2025, with sustained winds of 25–30 miles per hour and gusts reaching up to 50 miles per hour in squalls. The MET Office advised that seas will be very rough, with the likelihood of turbulent surf and reduced visibility during heavy showers.

Meteorologists note that this adverse weather is part of a larger system bringing rain and thunderstorms across much of the country. Unsettled conditions are expected to persist through the coming weekend, particularly over the northern and central atolls.

Residents and travelers are urged to remain vigilant and take extra precautions:

  • Avoid unnecessary sea travel during the alert period.
  • Secure boats, vessels, and loose outdoor items to prevent damage.
  • Fishermen and ferry operators are advised to check updated forecasts before setting out to sea.
  • Parents and schools should monitor children closely near beaches, harbors, and coastal areas.

The Maldives Meteorological Service continues to monitor the situation and will issue further updates as necessary. Citizens are advised to follow official channels for the latest information and weather alerts.
