President Muizzu delivers on promise as e-gates launch for Maldivians at Velana Airport

President Mohamed Muizzu has delivered on a key pledge to modernise airport services for citizens, with the official launch of the long awaited e-gate system for Maldivians at Velana International Airport Terminal 1.

The e-gate service was inaugurated on Tuesday by Controller General of Immigration CP (Retd) Ahmed Faseeh, marking a significant milestone in the administration’s push to introduce technology driven public services.

The ceremony was attended by Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen and Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited, as chief guests.

A total of 10 e-gates have been installed across both arrival and departure halls, allowing Maldivian passport holders to clear immigration independently within seconds. The system is expected to significantly reduce queues, ease congestion during peak travel periods, and provide a smoother, more dignified travel experience for citizens.

President Muizzu recently highlighted the rollout of the e-gates in a social media post, reaffirming that the initiative was a direct pledge made to the public and part of his broader vision to modernise national infrastructure and improve service delivery for Maldivians.

The introduction of e-gates also strengthens border management at , which continues to record rising passenger numbers driven by strong tourism performance and increased outbound travel.

Officials said the launch reflects the administration’s commitment to ensuring that national development projects deliver tangible benefits to citizens, positioning Velana International Airport as a modern regional hub while prioritising convenience, security, and efficiency for Maldivians.
