President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that he will begin meeting with journalists on a weekly basis every Monday starting next month, in a move aimed at strengthening engagement between the presidency and the media.
The announcement was made during the Presidential Statement 2026, delivered at the opening of the current parliamentary session.
According to the President, the weekly media engagement will take place every Monday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, providing journalists with regular access to seek clarification and raise questions on government policies and activities.
President Muizzu said the initiative is intended to enhance transparency and foster a stronger working relationship with the media. He added that, alongside his own weekly session, one cabinet minister will also meet with journalists for an hour each week, with the schedule to be announced by the President’s Office.
The President noted that the meetings will be held consistently unless affected by official travel, public holidays or other unavoidable scheduling changes.
Highlighting the administration’s engagement with the press, President Muizzu said he and members of his cabinet gave 424 interviews and briefings to local and international media outlets last year, responding to questions on government work and policies.
He also referred to the government’s handling of Right to Information (RTI) requests, stating that public institutions are working to make information available within legal limits. According to the President, 1,341 RTI requests were submitted to the President’s Office and various ministries last year, with 1,251 requests — around 93 percent — responded to.
President Muizzu said efforts are ongoing to address the remaining RTI requests, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to openness and accountability.
