President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) following its victory in Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliamentary Elections.
In a message shared on social media, President Muizzu extended his congratulations to BNP leader Tarique Rahman on the party’s electoral success. He expressed his readiness to work closely with the incoming leadership to further strengthen the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and Bangladesh.
The President also voiced confidence that bilateral relations between the two countries would continue to expand in scope and depth in the years ahead.
The BNP secured a two-thirds majority in the polls, giving it a clear mandate to form the next government. The election marked Bangladesh’s first national vote since the 2024 Gen Z-led uprising that led to the ousting of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Tarique Rahman, 60, who is the son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, returned to Bangladesh in December after 17 years in self-exile in London. His party’s victory is widely seen as a turning point in the country’s political landscape.
The vote, held on Thursday under heightened security, was largely viewed as a two-way contest between the BNP and an 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami. The outcome has been regarded by observers as critical for restoring political stability in the Muslim-majority nation of 175 million people, amid concerns over democratic backsliding and political tensions.
Bangladesh and the Maldives share close ties, with cooperation spanning labour, trade and people-to-people exchanges. President Muizzu’s message signals an intent to continue building on that partnership under the new administration in Dhaka.
