The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has recorded a significant reduction in improper waste disposal on public streets this year, marking a shift from previous trends.
Abdulla Shinan, General Manager of Central Operations at WAMCO, said the corporation is seeing an unprecedented level of public cooperation when it comes to adhering to waste disposal regulations. Speaking during an interview with Public Service Media (PSM News), Shinan attributed the improvement to increased awareness and compliance among residents.
The development comes as WAMCO finalises preparations for the holy month of Ramadan. As part of its pre-Ramadan efforts, the corporation recently carried out a large-scale cleaning campaign in Malé in collaboration with the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage.
While acknowledging operational challenges in Hulhumalé, Shinan said services are continuing at the maximum capacity of the company’s vehicle fleet. To support residents during the festive period, WAMCO will also offer its specialised “Call and Pickup” service in Hulhumalé to assist households with additional waste.
Attention has also turned to the 4,000 newly completed housing units developed by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation in Hulhumalé, where families are gradually relocating. Shinan noted that WAMCO is proactively managing the increase in bulky waste generated during the move-in process, including cardboard boxes and wooden packing materials.
“As people relocate, we are making specific arrangements to collect bulky waste such as empty boxes and packaging materials,” he said, urging residents to strictly follow the designated collection schedules during Ramadan.
To ensure smooth operations throughout the fasting month and the first seven days of Shawwal, WAMCO has established nightly waste collection windows across the Greater Malé region. In Malé, household waste will be collected from 8:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. In Hulhumalé, collections will take place between 9:00 p.m. and 2:30 a.m., while in Villimalé, waste will be gathered from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
WAMCO said the revised schedule aims to maintain cleanliness while accommodating Ramadan practices, encouraging residents to cooperate by disposing of waste within the specified hours.
