President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has presided over the foundation-laying ceremony of a major multi-storey parking facility in Hulhumalé, a project positioned as part of his administration’s broader vision to modernise the Greater Malé Area.
The 13-storey structure, including a basement level, will accommodate over 1,100 vehicles, with dedicated capacity for more than 600 cars and 500 motorcycles. Located in Hulhumalé Phase 1, the development aims to ease mounting parking congestion in one of the country’s fastest-growing urban centres.

The project is being implemented in accordance with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and the Housing Development Corporation, reflecting a coordinated national approach to urban planning and transport infrastructure development.
Designed for efficiency, the facility will incorporate ramps and vehicle elevators to ensure smooth traffic flow within the building. Authorities say the layout has been carefully planned to support organised vehicle movement and minimise congestion.

In addition to parking, the complex will function as a multi-purpose urban hub, featuring commercial outlets, vehicle service centres, electric vehicle charging stations, and dedicated recreational spaces.
The initiative is part of a larger programme to develop seven parking buildings across the Greater Malé Area. Collectively, these projects are expected to deliver more than 2,600 parking spaces for cars and 1,000 for motorcycles, offering a long-term solution to the region’s growing traffic and parking challenges.
Officials say the project aligns with the government’s strategic push to enhance infrastructure capacity, support urban expansion, and improve overall mobility in the capital region.
