President Mohamed Muizzu has announced that biometric information has now been collected from 98 percent of foreigners working legally in the Maldives, marking a major milestone under the government’s nationwide registration initiative.
In a post shared on X today, the President said authorities have completed fingerprint scans and photographic identification for the vast majority of expatriate workers holding verified and active work permits.
The biometric registration effort is being conducted under “Operation Kurangi,” a nationwide initiative launched on May 2, 2024, aimed at documenting all foreigners residing in the Maldives within a one-year period.
According to the President, the percentage of registered foreign workers stood at just 13 percent when the current administration assumed office on November 17, 2023.
President Muizzu said the next phase of the operation will focus on locating individuals who remain outside the system and deporting those residing in the country illegally.
He stated that special operations would be carried out over the coming six months to identify the remaining undocumented individuals as part of efforts to establish a long-term solution to illegal migration issues in the Maldives.
The government has previously stated that Operation Kurangi is intended to strengthen immigration monitoring, improve national security, and ensure that all foreign workers in the country are properly documented through biometric identification systems.
