By Hussain Shinan Published 4 hours ago

President Mohamed Muizzu has described the current phase of engagement between the Maldives and Sri Lanka as the beginning of a “new and dynamic chapter” in bilateral relations.

Speaking at a special ceremony held to exchange agreements with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Muizzu said the two countries are entering a renewed phase of cooperation focused on delivering tangible outcomes for their people.

He noted that discussions between the two sides had covered a broad range of areas, including trade and investment, education, health, fisheries, security, and environmental cooperation. Several agreements were also finalized during the ceremony, aimed at strengthening collaboration across these sectors.

The President said the focus now shifts toward implementation, ensuring that commitments made translate into practical benefits. He emphasized that both countries are working toward building a more forward-looking partnership that supports economic growth and regional stability.

Muizzu also highlighted the importance of expanding trade and investment opportunities, creating a more enabling environment for businesses, and unlocking new avenues for collaboration between the two nations.

In addition to economic priorities, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation in areas such as climate change, maritime security, and sustainable resource management, recognizing their shared challenges as island nations.

The President said the evolving partnership reflects a shared vision to strengthen ties, enhance regional cooperation, and promote long-term prosperity for both countries.
