MACL Takes Major Step Toward Inclusive Air Travel

By Hussain Shinan Published 5 hours ago

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has unveiled a dedicated “Calm Room” at Velana International Airport (VIA), marking a significant step toward creating a more inclusive and accessible travel experience for passengers with non-visible disabilities.

The facility, located in Terminal 1, was officially inaugurated on Saturday by MACL Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed during a ceremony attended by representatives from the Maldives Autism Association, Autism Care Maldives and senior company officials.

The initiative forms part of MACL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme and broader efforts to ensure airport services are accessible to all travelers, including those who may require additional support during their journey.

Introduced under the name “Boli”, inspired by the traditional Maldivian cowry shell, the programme aims to provide a calmer and more supportive airport experience for passengers with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder and other non-visible disabilities.

According to MACL, the newly established Calm Room has been specially designed to help reduce travel-related stress and anxiety. The space features sensory-friendly facilities, calming activities and supportive resources intended to provide comfort before departure or upon arrival.

Airport travel can often be overwhelming for individuals with sensory sensitivities due to crowded environments, unfamiliar surroundings and constant noise. Similar sensory rooms and assistance programmes have been introduced at major international airports around the world to make air travel more comfortable for passengers with hidden disabilities.

As part of the Boli programme, eligible passengers will also receive access to special assistance services. Individuals requesting support will be provided with a dedicated identification card and a special lanyard, allowing airport staff to quickly recognize that additional assistance may be required.

MACL said the system is designed to facilitate smoother airport procedures and ensure passengers receive timely support throughout their journey.

The facility also allows one accompanying parent, guardian or caregiver to remain inside the Calm Room with the passenger, providing additional reassurance and support during the travel process.

Representatives from organizations advocating for people with autism and special needs welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important step toward making public services more inclusive and responsive to the needs of all members of society.

Velana International Airport has undergone significant expansion and modernization in recent years as passenger numbers continue to grow alongside the Maldives’ tourism sector. MACL has increasingly focused on improving passenger experience through infrastructure upgrades, digital services and accessibility initiatives.

The company stated that the launch of the Calm Room reflects its commitment to ensuring every traveler can access airport services comfortably and with dignity.

MACL added that enhancing accessibility and inclusivity remains a key part of its vision for delivering world-class airport services at the country’s main international gateway.
