Voting is underway in the People’s National Congress (PNC) constituency elections, with party members casting ballots to elect constituency leaders in electoral districts where the party does not currently have a sitting Member of Parliament.
Polling opened at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and will continue until 4:00 p.m., according to party officials.
A PNC official told PSM News that voting began as scheduled and is proceeding smoothly, adding that all administrative and logistical preparations had been completed ahead of polling day.
Across the Maldives, voting is being conducted in 131 islands, with nearly 2,500 candidates contesting various constituency-level positions.
In the Greater Malé region, ballot boxes have been established at five polling centres to accommodate eligible voters.
Aminiya School is serving voters registered in the cities of Malé, Addu City, Fuvahmulah City and Thinadhoo City who are casting their ballots in the capital. Iskandhar School has been designated for voters registered in island constituencies outside the cities but voting from Malé.
Separate polling stations have also been arranged for Hulhumalé and Vilimalé residents. Rehendhi School in Hulhumalé Phase I is designated for Hulhumalé South voters, while Kamaluddin Pre-School in Hulhumalé Phase II is serving those registered in Hulhumalé North. Muhyiddin School has been assigned as the polling station for voters from the Vilimalé constituency.
Party members have also been able to verify their assigned polling stations and review voting procedures through the PNC’s official website.
Under the PNC’s constitution, Members of Parliament elected on the party’s ticket automatically serve as presidents of their respective constituencies. As a result, Saturday’s vote is being held only in constituencies where the party does not currently have a PNC MP representing the area.
The internal election forms part of the party’s efforts to strengthen its organisational structure and appoint leadership at the constituency level ahead of future political activities.
