Road Construction Progresses in Hoarafushi Under MTCC Project

By Hussain Shinan Published 2 hours ago

Construction work on the second phase of the Haa Alifu Hoarafushi Internal Road Development Project continues to progress, with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) now carrying out UPVC pipe installation and kerb stone works.

Providing an update on the project, MTCC said the ongoing activities form part of the infrastructure work required before the island’s roads are prepared for asphalt surfacing.

The second phase of the project will see the development of 12,245 square metres of internal roads, including sub-base preparation, installation of the aggregate base course (ABC), asphalt paving, pavement construction and landscaping.

The scope of the project also includes burying utility service lines and cable junctions, installing streetlights and erecting road signs to improve safety and modernise the island’s road network.

The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure awarded the contract to MTCC on 19 April 2024 for a value of MVR 30.46 million.

The latest phase builds on work completed under the first stage of the project, which was also undertaken by MTCC.

During Phase One, the company developed 11 roads spanning approximately 5.3 kilometres, with a total carriageway area of 25,909 square metres. The project also included the construction of 11,114 square metres of pavements, a drainage network, street lighting and road signage.

Road development projects such as the one in Hoarafushi form part of the government’s broader efforts to improve transport infrastructure across the islands by upgrading road networks, strengthening drainage systems and enhancing pedestrian safety.

Once completed, the second phase is expected to provide smoother and safer travel for residents while improving the overall appearance and functionality of the island’s internal roads.
