Prominent lawyer Nazim Sattar, brother of former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, was stabbed by unidentified assailants in Malé City late Friday night, sources close to the family confirmed to The Standard.
According to a statement issued to the media by the Maldives Police Service, ADK Hospital notified authorities at approximately 12:09 a.m. on May 8, 2026, after an individual injured in an assault involving a sharp object was brought to the hospital for treatment.
Police said the victim is a 49-year-old Maldivian man, but did not officially disclose his identity.
Sources close to the family later confirmed the victim to be Nazim Sattar, a well-known lawyer in the Maldives.
Authorities stated that an investigation into the incident is currently underway. No arrests or further details regarding the attackers have yet been announced.
The stabbing occurred exactly five years after the 6 May 2021 terror attack targeting Nasheed, in which the former president narrowly survived an assassination attempt after an improvised explosive device exploded near his residence in Malé.
The 2021 bombing drew widespread international condemnation and heightened concerns over violent extremism and politically motivated attacks in the Maldives.
