President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has described young Maldivians as one of the country’s greatest strengths, pledging that his administration will continue expanding opportunities for higher education, skills development and meaningful employment.
In a message marking International Youth Day on Wednesday, President Muizzu said the future of the Maldives rests heavily on its younger generation, who account for around 45 percent of the country’s population.
The President said the creativity, determination and perseverance demonstrated by young Maldivians are already playing an important role in shaping communities and contributing to the country’s development.
With such a significant proportion of the population made up of young people, Muizzu said the aspirations and ambitions of the younger generation will ultimately help determine the direction the country takes in the years ahead.
He assured that the government would continue working to create pathways for young people to pursue higher education, develop practical skills and secure meaningful employment.
The President also highlighted the accomplishments of Maldivian youth across a range of fields, including religion, education, science and sports, describing their achievements as evidence of the determination and potential of the current generation.
Government initiatives aimed at preparing young people for employment were also highlighted in the President’s message.
Muizzu pointed to the National Apprenticeship Program and National Service Program as important initiatives intended to provide young people with practical experience and help bridge the gap between formal education and the workforce.
The government has placed increasing emphasis on developing skills and employment opportunities for young Maldivians, particularly as the economy expands into new areas and demand grows for skilled workers across different industries.
The President said young people’s ideas, voices and ambitions must remain an important part of national development, expressing confidence that their participation will contribute towards building a more prosperous, resilient and sustainable Maldives.
He further said the energy and commitment of Maldivian youth could help lead the country towards greater self-sufficiency while strengthening its ability to respond to future challenges.
International Youth Day is observed annually on August 12, providing an opportunity to highlight issues affecting young people and recognise their role as partners in social and economic development.
The day was established by the United Nations and has since been observed around the world through initiatives focusing on youth participation, opportunities and the challenges faced by younger generations.
Several senior Maldivian officials also extended greetings to young people on Wednesday, including Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla and Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef.
President Muizzu said that with young people playing a leading role in the country’s development, he remains confident about the future of the Maldives and its path towards sustainable growth and prosperity.
