The facility visits form part of MWSC’s broader activities marking Engineers’ Day, with the company placing particular emphasis this year on introducing younger generations to engineering.
MWSC also participated in the Engineers’ Day Children’s Evening, where it organised activities aimed at allowing children to explore engineering concepts through interactive experiences.
The company separately held an internal Engineers’ Day event recognising its engineers and other employees involved in maintaining water and sewerage infrastructure.
By opening operational facilities to students in different regions, MWSC extended those activities beyond the Greater Malé area and provided young people in island communities with direct exposure to engineering careers and infrastructure.
Water and sewerage systems in the Maldives present distinct engineering challenges because services must be developed and operated across geographically dispersed islands. Infrastructure can include desalination facilities, storage and distribution networks, sewerage systems, pumping infrastructure and treatment facilities, all of which require continued technical oversight and maintenance.
MWSC has expanded its role beyond the Greater Malé region over the years, undertaking water and sewerage projects and operating utility infrastructure in a number of islands.
The company has also been engaging with island councils as part of efforts to improve services and coordinate infrastructure development. Its management recently held discussions with Dhuvaafaru Council on ongoing initiatives and improvements to utility services on the island.
MWSC said the Engineers’ Day visits gave students an opportunity to learn, explore and gain inspiration from engineering, while seeing firsthand how technical teams contribute to the everyday functioning of their communities.
The initiative also comes amid a broader push to encourage more Maldivians to pursue careers in engineering and other technical fields, with Engineers’ Day activities this year involving government institutions and state-owned companies across the country.
