Ameenee Magu rehabilitation moves forward with Segment 2 paving complete

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed asphalt paving on the second segment of Ameenee Magu, marking further progress in the ongoing rehabilitation of one of Malé’s busiest roads.
MTCC confirmed on Monday night that paving works on Segment 2 had been completed after work shifted to the section last week following the completion of the first segment.
The second segment extends from Izzudheen Magu towards Ghiyasuddin International School. Crews removed the deteriorated asphalt before laying two new layers as part of the rehabilitation works.
MTCC said the improvements are expected to provide smoother and more convenient travel for motorists while improving connectivity and accessibility in the capital.
Work on Segment 1, an approximately 270-metre stretch between Izzudheen Magu near the Voice of Maldives building and the park beside Dharumavantha Hospital, began in early August.
Before repaving the road, MTCC carried out extensive work on the underlying layers, including subgrade repairs and Aggregate Base Course works. Asphalt paving began on September 19, with both layers completed on September 22.
Final works on the first segment have included road markings and adjustments to utility junctions before the section is fully returned to regular use.
The government awarded the Ameenee Magu rehabilitation works to MTCC on June 15 after sections of the road deteriorated significantly, particularly towards its western end.
The project was initially expected to be handled by Road Development Corporation (RDC), which had announced plans to begin repairs earlier in the year. However, following delays and changes to the proposed works, the Housing Ministry reassigned the project to MTCC.
The current rehabilitation goes beyond filling potholes and resurfacing damaged areas. In sections where deterioration was more severe, MTCC has removed the existing road surface and repaired underlying layers before applying fresh asphalt.
The works also include changes to pavements around bus stops and adjustments to utility infrastructure. The wider Ameenee Magu rehabilitation programme is targeted for completion in November.
The latest repairs come less than three years after Ameenee Magu underwent a major redevelopment.
The previous project, valued at MVR 84.4 million, was awarded to RDC during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration and covered approximately 1.79 kilometres of Ameenee Magu. The overall redevelopment was completed in January 2024.
The project included resurfacing the road as well as improvements to drainage, street lighting, pedestrian accessibility, utility infrastructure and bus stops.
However, sections of the road subsequently began deteriorating, with potholes, uneven surfaces and wave-like deformation appearing in heavily used areas.
The western section of Ameenee Magu has been particularly affected due to the volume of traffic passing through the area, including buses and other heavy vehicles.
Technical assessments and previous reports have pointed to several factors that may have contributed to the deterioration, including problems with underlying road layers, heavy traffic and sections being reopened before the newly laid asphalt had sufficient time to settle.
With paving now completed on the second segment, MTCC is continuing the remaining components of the rehabilitation programme as it works towards completing the wider Ameenee Magu repairs.
