MTCC to begin asphalt paving on Ameenee Magu Segment 3 this week

By Hussain Shinan Published 8 hours ago

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is preparing to begin asphalt paving on the third segment of Ameenee Magu this week, as work continues to restore sections of the busy road that have deteriorated due to heavy traffic and extensive surface damage.

The company said preparations are progressing on the stretch between Izzetudheen Magu and Koorukendi Hingun, with the installation of the Aggregate Base Course (ABC) layer expected to be completed on Monday.

Once the base layer is finished, contractors will proceed with laying fresh asphalt, followed by road marking work scheduled to begin next week.

Construction on Segment 3 commenced on October 4 as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to rehabilitate damaged sections of Ameenee Magu in Malé.

According to MTCC, the current phase covers approximately 1,924.77 square metres of road surface.

The work involves removing the existing asphalt, preparing and installing a new aggregate base, resurfacing the road and applying fresh traffic markings.

The project is intended to address the worsening condition of the road, particularly in the Maafannu area, where potholes and damaged asphalt have made driving increasingly difficult.

Ameenee Magu is an important road in the capital’s transport network, regularly used by buses, commercial vehicles and other motorists.

The frequent movement of heavy vehicles has placed considerable pressure on the road surface, making repairs necessary to improve driving conditions and maintain safer traffic movement.

The resurfacing programme is being carried out under a government contract awarded to MTCC on June 15 last year.

Work initially began on two sections of the road, both of which have since been completed and reopened to motorists.

Segment 1 covered the stretch between the Voice of Maldives (VOM) building and Dharumavantha Hospital, while Segment 2 involved the four-way intersection directly in front of VOM.

With both sections back in use, attention has shifted to Segment 3, where the company is now preparing for the final stages of resurfacing.

MTCC also outlined plans for the next phase of the project, which will begin after the completion of the current section.

Segment 4 will cover the stretch extending from Koorukendi Hingun to Ghiyasuddin International School.

The upcoming phase will involve resurfacing approximately 1,148.91 square metres of road.

As with the previous sections, the work will include stripping away damaged asphalt, installing a fresh ABC layer, applying new asphalt and painting road markings.

The phased approach allows repairs to be carried out on individual stretches of Ameenee Magu, with completed sections reopened before work progresses to subsequent areas.

Road deterioration has remained a concern in parts of Malé, where limited road space, frequent vehicle movement and the operation of heavy transport vehicles place considerable demands on existing infrastructure.

Damaged road surfaces can also create difficulties for public transport operations, particularly along routes regularly used by buses.

The ongoing repairs are expected to improve road conditions and provide a smoother surface for motorists once the remaining sections are completed.

MTCC has not announced a final completion date for the entire resurfacing programme, although the company expects asphalt paving on Segment 3 to begin this week, followed by road markings next week.
