The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has opened applications for a vacancy on the Supreme Court following its decision to approve the retirement of Justice Ali Rasheed, who is set to leave the bench on 1 December.
The commission announced the recruitment process on Thursday, inviting qualified legal professionals to apply for a position on the country’s highest court.
Ali Rasheed, who was appointed to the Supreme Court six years ago, is due to retire at the end of November after the JSC approved his request to step down.
According to the commission’s announcement, the position carries a basic monthly salary of MVR 59,700, together with a living allowance of MVR 25,000 and a risk allowance of MVR 3,300.
The combined monthly remuneration amounts to MVR 88,000, excluding additional benefits determined by the People’s Majlis.
Applicants must possess at least a bachelor’s degree in Islamic Sharia, Law, or a qualification combining Law and Islamic Sharia.
Candidates are also required to have a minimum of seven years of professional experience as a judge, practising lawyer or through a combination of judicial service and legal practice.
The JSC has instructed interested candidates to submit their applications electronically through its Fahires portal before 10:00 am on Sunday, 8 November.
The recruitment process follows the constitutional procedure governing appointments to the Supreme Court, under which the President nominates candidates after consulting the Judicial Service Commission.
The President’s nominees must subsequently receive approval from the People’s Majlis before they can be appointed to the bench.
The Supreme Court is the highest judicial authority in the Maldives, responsible for hearing matters within its constitutional and statutory jurisdiction and serving as the final court of appeal.
Its decisions play a central role in the interpretation of the Constitution, the application of national laws and the resolution of significant legal disputes.
The Judicial Service Commission, meanwhile, is the constitutional body responsible for overseeing key aspects of judicial administration, including matters relating to the appointment, conduct and removal of judges in accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws.
The upcoming vacancy follows Ali Rasheed’s decision to retire after approximately six years of service on the Supreme Court bench.
Applications for the position will close at 10:00 am on Sunday, with the subsequent appointment subject to the constitutional nomination and parliamentary approval process.
