The Maldives-Türkiye Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) officially came into effect on August 1, marking a new chapter in economic cooperation between the two countries and introducing reduced or eliminated customs duties on dozens of goods traded between them.
The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade announced that all legal procedures required by both governments have now been completed, with the Maldives and Türkiye exchanging the final written notifications needed for the agreement to enter into force.
According to the ministry, both countries had agreed that the PTA would officially take effect from August 1, 2026, making the trade concessions available from that date.
The agreement is expected to deepen commercial ties between the Maldives and Türkiye by reducing or removing customs duties on 75 categories of goods, while creating new opportunities for exporters and importers in both countries.
One of the key benefits highlighted by the government is expanded market access for the Maldivian fisheries sector. Under the agreement, Maldivian marine fish products will receive preferential access to the Turkish market, opening export opportunities to a country with a population of around 85 million people.
Officials believe the move will provide a significant boost to the country’s fisheries industry, one of the Maldives’ largest export sectors, by diversifying export destinations and strengthening trade links beyond traditional markets.
The government also expects the agreement to benefit consumers and businesses in the Maldives through improved access to Turkish products. The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade said the PTA includes concessions on the import of a range of goods, including staple food items, helping diversify import sources and supporting efforts to manage commodity prices.
According to the ministry, broader sourcing options are expected to strengthen supply chains while contributing to greater economic resilience.
The PTA traces its origins to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s first official overseas visit after taking office. Türkiye was the first country he visited in an official capacity, travelling to Ankara from November 26 to 29, 2023, where he held talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas including trade, investment and economic development.
The ministry said the implementation of the agreement reflects the shared vision established during those discussions and represents an important milestone in expanding economic cooperation between the two nations.
Following negotiations initiated after the presidential meeting, the Maldives-Türkiye Preferential Trade Agreement was formally signed in November 2024.
Officials have described the agreement as more than a conventional trade arrangement, saying it demonstrates both countries’ commitment to building mutually beneficial economic partnerships, improving market access for exporters, ensuring more reliable access to essential imports and promoting sustainable, inclusive economic growth.
The government added that the PTA is expected to elevate Maldives-Türkiye economic relations to a new level while creating fresh opportunities for businesses in both countries and supporting long-term development through closer international trade cooperation.
