PNC Dismisses State Minister Nihad’s Claims of Opposition-Driven Resort Terror Plots

By Ahmed Ashraf Published December 24, 2024

In a firm response to recent statements made by the State Minister of Tourism, Mohamed, the People’s National Congress (PNC) has refuted allegations concerning planned rallies by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) at tourist resorts in the Malé Atoll. During a meeting held at the PNC headquarters last night, the State Minister characterized these events as a direct terrorist threat to the tourism sector and a potential blow to the broader economy.

The PNC has categorically denied these claims, asserting that no responsible political party or civil society organization in the Maldives would partake in activities detrimental to the tourism industry or which could inflict lasting damage on the nation’s economy. The party emphasized that all entities must operate within legal confines, and any deviation from this will be addressed by relevant authorities.

Highlighting the Government’s steadfast dedication to maintaining a safe and secure environment for tourists, the PNC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding stakeholder investments in the tourism sector. Ensuring that the Maldives continues to thrive as a world-class destination remains a paramount concern.

The PNC extended gratitude to government institutions, political parties, civil society organizations, and individuals who contribute tirelessly to preserving the Maldives as a prime location for tourists and investors alike. The party urged all involved to avoid actions that could threaten national peace, stability, and economic prosperity.

In closing, the PNC called for collective efforts to uphold and enhance the Maldives’ esteemed global reputation as a leading destination for tourism and investment, ensuring sustained growth and success in this vital sector.

Nihad’s statements have sparked significant backlash, leading to his suspension amid widespread calls for accountability. The opposition MDP has also demanded a thorough investigation into Nihad’s assertions to address concerns regarding these serious allegations.
