A 59-year-old man was found dead in the bathroom of a guesthouse in Malé on Saturday, marking the sixth unexplained death reported in the capital over the past month.
The deceased has been identified as Abdulla Zaki, a resident of Bokarumaage, Hulhudhoo, Addu City. According to police, they were alerted to the incident at around 2:00 p.m. after receiving a report of a man who had fallen in the bathroom of a guesthouse located in the Henveiru ward of Malé. Zaki was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Maldives Police Service has confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. Authorities have yet to disclose whether foul play is suspected or if the death was accidental.
This incident adds to a string of mysterious deaths in the city, fueling public concern. Just two days prior, 41-year-old Hussain Ahmed was found dead at a residence in Maafannu. A post-mortem examination has been conducted, though the results are still pending.
In December alone, multiple unexplained deaths have been reported. On December 22, a 45-year-old man was discovered dead in a house in Galolhu, while a 35-year-old man was found dead in a nearby area on December 21. Earlier in the month, a 33-year-old man was found lifeless on a road in Gaafu Alif Dhaandhoo, and on December 7, a 36-year-old man was discovered in the waters near Hulhumalé.
Authorities are working to piece together any connections between the cases as investigations continue. The recent pattern of deaths has raised concerns among residents, with many calling for increased transparency and answers regarding the ongoing incidents.
