Teacher accused of abusing disabled Student walks free on conditional release

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 19, 2025

A teacher accused of physically abusing a student with disabilities has been released on conditional terms following a court hearing to determine detention.

The incident, which surfaced last Thursday, involves a primary-grade student with special needs. According to police reports, the teacher was taken into custody last Friday under a court order. However, during the hearing on detention, the court decided to release the suspect conditionally. The police, in collaboration with relevant authorities, continue to investigate the matter.

The Ministry of Education first brought attention to the case last Thursday, stating that a school in the Malé area had reported allegations of physical abuse against a special needs student. The ministry confirmed that the case had been promptly reported to the police for further investigation.

Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu has expressed grave concern over the incident, stating that any form of abuse against students, particularly those with disabilities, is unacceptable. He emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to addressing such cases with utmost seriousness, ensuring they are reported to the relevant authorities and steps are taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“This incident is deeply troubling,” Dr. Shafeeu said. “Teachers must ensure that students are educated in a safe and happy environment, and protecting their rights should be a priority.” The Minister called on educators nationwide to uphold these principles and safeguard the well-being of students under their care.

In line with the Child Rights Protection Act, the Ministry has refrained from disclosing the identities of the school or teacher involved, citing concerns that such information could indirectly reveal the identity of the student.

This is not the first time misconduct involving educators has come to light in the country. Previous cases, including incidents of grooming, have raised alarms about the need for stricter oversight and enforcement of child protection measures in schools.

The ongoing investigation aims to ensure justice for the student and reinforce the message that abuse in educational settings will not be tolerated. Authorities have assured the public that further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
