EC Zahid quits following widely criticised, poorly organised election

By Ahmed Ashraf Published May 1, 2026

The President of the Elections Commission of Maldives, Mohamed Zahid, has resigned from his post, with the Commission confirming his departure on Friday.

The Commission did not issue a formal statement but confirmed that Zahid had stepped down. No details have been provided regarding the reasons behind his resignation.

Zahid, who was appointed to the Commission on January 26 last year, initially served as Vice President before assuming the presidency of the electoral body. His tenure comes to an abrupt end following mounting scrutiny over the management of the April 4 election.

The vote was widely criticised for organisational lapses and logistical shortcomings, with observers pointing to delays and coordination issues that raised concerns about the Commission’s preparedness and execution.

The Elections Commission is expected to announce a replacement soon to fill the vacancy.
