In a decisive move to enhance the welfare of citizens during the holy month of Ramadan, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has mandated the implementation of an online token system for the distribution of canned fish in Malé area. This initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Local Government, aims to alleviate the extensive queues witnessed during the initial distribution phase.
The distribution commenced on February 20, 2025, across Malé, Vilimalé, and Hulhumalé, but was met with significant public dissatisfaction due to prolonged waiting times. Responding promptly, President Muizzu directed the establishment of a more efficient system to ensure residents receive their provisions with ease and dignity.
The newly introduced online token system allows individuals to select a specific distribution center and time slot, thereby minimizing congestion and wait times. Upon securing a token, recipients can collect a case containing 48 cans of ‘chunks in oil’ tuna, with each can weighing 180 grams, from their chosen center during the designated time. Distribution hours are set from 8:30 PM to 11:00 PM nightly until the end of February.
To obtain their allocated canned fish, residents must present a recent electricity bill and a valid ID card at the time of collection. Each individual is entitled to receive up to three cases, corresponding to three separate utility meters. The government has pledged to continue this distribution until all households have been served.
Recognizing the diverse needs of the community, the Ministry of Local Government has assured that provisions will be made for individuals who may face challenges using the online system, ensuring inclusive access to this essential service. The ministry remains committed to monitoring and refining the distribution process, emphasizing that any necessary adjustments will be implemented to enhance efficiency and resident satisfaction.
