By Ahmed Ashraf Published March 26, 2025

In a decisive move to enhance the Maldivian judicial system, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu inspected the ongoing development of the new Criminal and Drug Courts’ premises on Wednesday. This initiative aims to address the pressing issue of space constraints that have long plagued the judiciary.

Accompanied by Cabinet ministers, senior judicial officials, and representatives from the Housing Development Corporation, President Muizzu meticulously reviewed the building plans and received comprehensive updates on the project’s progress. This hands-on approach underscores his administration’s commitment to expediting judicial processes and ensuring timely justice.

Earlier this year, during his Presidential Address, President Muizzu identified delays in hearings and verdicts as significant challenges within the judicial system. To combat these issues, he announced the forthcoming construction of the Superior Court Complex in Hulhumalé, with plans to commence this ambitious project within the year.

In addition to infrastructural advancements, the government is actively pursuing legal reforms to fortify the judiciary’s role as a trusted pillar of the nation. Notably, President Muizzu has pledged to introduce amendments to the Drugs Act and a new Gang Crimes Prohibition Bill. These legislative measures aim to dismantle criminal networks and address the drug epidemic, reflecting the administration’s unwavering dedication to public safety and justice.

These concerted efforts signify a transformative era for the Maldivian judiciary, with President Muizzu at the helm steering the nation toward a more efficient and reliable legal system.
