The Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) has removed Aishath Ali (M. Vaareyvilla) from the Board of Directors of Visit Maldives Corporation Limited, with immediate effect.
Aishath Ali was appointed to the board on April 26 alongside Ali Shinan, Huda Fahmy, and Aishath Malha.
Her removal comes just two months after her appointment and follows her return to the board of the corporation formerly known as the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).
Aishath Ali previously served on the MMPRC board during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen, when the corporation became the centre of the Maldives’ largest tourism corruption scandal. During her tenure on the board, she was also allocated a tourism island, a decision that attracted criticism within the tourism industry due to concerns over governance and conflicts of interest.
While her appointment to the Visit Maldives board in April received little public attention, it sparked concern and discussion among figures within the tourism sector because of her previous association with MMPRC during the period of the scandal.
The PCB has not disclosed the reason for Aishath Ali’s removal, and no replacement has yet been announced.
