Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) is aiming to wrap up all ongoing water and sewerage projects across the country before the end of 2025, according to the company’s Managing Director, Abdul Matheen Mohamed.
Speaking during a recent appearance on PSM News’ Raajje Miadhu programme, Matheen said that under the current administration, several long-stalled projects were revived and completed last year, with a fresh batch now scheduled for rollout.
He noted that water and sewerage services are set to be introduced in 20 more islands this year. While groundwork has already commenced on some of these islands, others are currently undergoing the design process. Despite the varying stages, Matheen expressed confidence that all ongoing projects will reach completion within the year, with remaining design-phase projects targeted for mid-2026.
“To minimise costs and streamline execution, the government has decided to assign these projects to state-owned companies rather than outsourcing to private contractors,” he explained.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who took office in November 2023, had pledged earlier this year to resume and fast-track all previously stalled water and sewerage projects across the Maldives—an essential service that many island communities have long awaited.
MWSC’s commitment signals a renewed push by the government to address basic infrastructure needs in outer islands, in line with its broader development agenda.
