The People’s Majlis is set to debate a resolution seeking the removal of Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim during Sunday’s sitting, as procedural arrangements for the motion have now been finalised.
The proposal to remove Nazim, who represents the Dhiggaru constituency, was submitted to Parliament on the 14th of this month. Parliamentary officials said the process is being carried out in accordance with both the Constitution and the standing orders of the Majlis.
The matter has now been scheduled for the 20th sitting of the first session of Parliament this year.
According to decisions taken by Parliament’s General Purpose Committee, Nazim will be given 10 minutes to respond to the allegations and speak in his defence before the debate begins.
The debate itself has been allocated one hour, with speaking time to be distributed among political parties. Each participating member will be permitted to speak once for up to three minutes.
Parliamentary rules state that once a motion to remove either the Speaker or Deputy Speaker is formally submitted, no other parliamentary business can proceed until a decision is reached on that matter.
Although the Deputy Speaker is permitted to attend the sitting and defend himself, parliamentary procedure bars him from taking part in the vote.
Under the rules of the Majlis, the sitting must be presided over by the Speaker of Parliament, while the resolution would require a majority vote from members present and voting in order to pass.
The upcoming debate is expected to draw significant political attention as tensions continue within the parliamentary landscape following recent developments in the Majlis.
