President Muizzu Orders Urgent Probe into Capital-Wide Power Outage, Vows Lasting Solutions

By Ahmed Ashraf Published June 1, 2025

In response to a sweeping power outage that disrupted daily life across Malé, Hulhumalé, and Hulhulé, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has mandated an immediate investigation into the incident, underscoring the government’s commitment to preventing future occurrences.

The blackout, which plunged the capital region into darkness, has raised concerns about the resilience of the nation’s power infrastructure. While the State Electric Company (STELCO) has previously scheduled outages for maintenance and upgrades, the scale and suddenness of this event have prompted calls for a thorough review.

President Muizzu emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that the government will take all necessary measures to reorganize the electricity service to ensure such incidents do not recur. This directive aligns with the administration’s broader agenda to enhance public utilities and infrastructure.
